Trade gold with FxPro from South Africa
The broker behind Veld Terminal: platforms, funding and the honest regulatory note for South African gold traders.
Platforms for gold: MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge
FxPro offers four main platforms for trading gold: MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and its proprietary FxPro Edge. All four give you access to XAU/USD with one-click trading, advanced charting and the ability to run automated strategies. MT4 is the most widely used, MT5 has more order types and timeframes, and cTrader is known for its fast execution and level-two pricing.
For a South African gold trader, the choice of platform is largely a matter of habit. If you have used MT4 before, stick with it; it does everything you need. If you want more advanced order management or a cleaner interface, try cTrader. FxPro Edge is a newer web-based platform aimed at beginners who want simplicity without losing access to leverage and risk tools.
All platforms show the same underlying gold market, but the spread and execution can differ slightly between account types and platforms. Before you commit real money, open a demo account and compare the spreads you actually see on each platform during the London-New York overlap. That is the only way to know your true trading costs.
Funding from South Africa and account types
South African clients of FxPro can fund their accounts using local cards and bank transfers in ZAR, as well as e-wallets. Deposits in rand are converted to your account base currency, usually USD, at the prevailing exchange rate. Withdrawals are processed back to the same method where possible, subject to anti-money-laundering checks.
FxPro offers several account types, but the main distinction for gold traders is between commission-free and raw-spread accounts. The commission-free account has a wider spread and no commission; the raw-spread account has a much tighter spread but charges a commission per lot. Which is cheaper depends on your trading style and size. The calculators on this site can help you compare the all-in cost.
The maximum leverage available in South Africa is up to 1:200 for retail clients and up to 1:500 for eligible or professional clients, depending on the instrument. That is a cap, not a target. A 0.10-lot gold position at 1:200 needs about $85.50 margin; at 1:500 it needs about $34.20. The higher leverage frees up capital but magnifies the loss from any adverse move.
The honest risk and regulation note
FxPro is licensed by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK and the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, and an FxPro entity holds a Financial Sector Conduct Authority licence in South Africa. Before you open an account, check which entity will actually serve you — the South African entity, the UK entity, or another. That determines which regulator you deal with and what protections apply.
Trading gold on leverage is high risk. You are speculating on the price of an asset that can move 5% or more in a day, and with leverage your losses can exceed your initial deposit. There is no guaranteed profit, no strategy that always works, and no broker that can protect you from the market. The only real protection is to risk a small fraction of your account on each trade and to use stops.
FxPro is the broker partner of Veld Terminal, but this site is independent. We provide calculators and market information; FxPro provides execution. Always read the legal documents, understand the costs, and start with a demo account until you are consistently profitable on paper. Then, and only then, risk real money.
How to open and fund an account
Opening an FxPro account from South Africa takes about ten minutes. Go to the FxPro website, choose your account type, and complete the online application with your ID and proof of address. South African residents can use their green barcoded ID or smart ID card, plus a utility bill or bank statement no older than three months.
Once your account is verified, log in and choose a funding method. Local card deposits are usually instant; bank transfers in ZAR can take one to two business days. E-wallets are also available. Start with an amount you can afford to lose, and use the minimum lot size until you are comfortable with the platform and the market.
Before you place your first gold trade, use the calculators on this site to plan it. Enter the live price, your stop distance and your risk in rand. The position size calculator will tell you how many lots to trade. Then execute on FxPro with a stop loss in place. That is the whole workflow: plan here, trade there, review every day.
FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL serves South Africa and defines your account protection
Your account with Veld Terminal is opened under FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL, the entity that onboards clients from South Africa. This matters because client fund protection, dispute resolution, and compensation eligibility all follow the rules of that entity, not the FCA or CySEC licences of the wider FxPro group. Before funding, check the legal documents in your account portal to confirm the exact entity name. The regulator caveat for South African traders is clear: FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK) and CySEC, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence in South Africa, but you must verify which entity your own account is opened with because protections differ.
The FSCA licence held by an FxPro entity in South Africa brings local regulatory oversight, but your account under the Costa Rica entity may not fall under that FSCA licence. This means you cannot assume FSCA complaint procedures or the FSCA compensation framework apply to your specific account. Instead, your recourse is typically through the entity's internal complaints process and the laws of Costa Rica, where the entity is registered. Always read the terms of business and the risk disclosure for your account entity before you deposit, as this determines which regulator you can approach if something goes wrong.
Practically, what changes for a South African trader is the layer of local protection. If your account is under the FSCA-licensed entity, you gain access to the South African ombud and FSCA oversight. If it is under the Costa Rica entity, you rely on the group's reputation, its FCA and CySEC licences for other entities, and the Costa Rican legal system. The difference is not about platform speed or spreads; it is about where you can complain and whether compensation schemes apply. Check the footer of your account agreement or ask support to confirm the entity before your first EFT deposit.
Account type changes your cost per trade mainly through spreads, commissions and execution
The account type you select on Veld Terminal changes what a gold trade costs because each account has a different fee structure. Some account types include the broker's charge in the spread, while others quote a raw spread plus a separate commission per lot. The exact spread and commission are not fixed numbers here; they depend on the account type, market volatility, and the liquidity provider at the moment you trade. What you can know is the mechanism: a spread-only account builds the cost into the buy-sell difference you see on the platform, while a commission account shows a tighter quoted spread but adds a per-lot fee after the trade.
For a standard lot of gold (100 oz), a commission is typically quoted in US dollars per lot round turn, but the precise amount varies by account and is not a number you should assume. The spread on XAU/USD is also variable and widens during news or low liquidity, so your cost per trade is higher when the market is fast. When you size a 0.10-lot position on the one-screen trade ticket, the platform shows the margin required (about $85.50 at 1:200 leverage) but not the total cost. You must check the contract specifications for your account type to see whether the spread is the main cost or if a commission applies.
Speed of execution also differs by account type. Some account types offer market execution with no requotes, while others may use instant execution that can reject a price if it moves. For gold, where price moves are quick, a market execution account means your order fills at the best available price in milliseconds, but the spread at that moment is what you pay. A commission account may suit you if you trade often and want the spread visible, but the per-lot commission adds up. Choose the account type by how you trade: spread-only for simplicity, commission for potentially lower spread cost if the commission is low, but never assume one is cheaper without checking the actual numbers in your account portal.
MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge differ in order depth, hedging and one-screen trade sizing
The four platforms on Veld Terminal differ mainly in order execution style, available order types, and how fast you can size a gold trade. MT4 is the classic platform with market and pending orders, one-click trading from the chart, and a simple trade ticket that lets you enter lots, stop loss and take profit in seconds. MT5 adds more order types, a depth of market view, and a built-in economic calendar, but the trade ticket is similar. cTrader is designed for speed with a detachable chart, quick trade buttons, and a clean order ticket that shows margin and pip value before you confirm. FxPro Edge is a web platform aimed at fast, single-screen trading with a simplified interface.
Hedging is a key difference: MT4 and MT5 allow hedging, meaning you can hold a buy and sell position on gold at the same time. cTrader also supports hedging. FxPro Edge may have different rules, so check before you open opposite trades. For fast sizing, cTrader shows the margin requirement and pip value directly on the order ticket, which means you do not need a spreadsheet to know that a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin at 1:200 leverage. MT4 shows margin after the trade, while MT5 shows it before. If speed is your priority, cTrader or FxPro Edge may fit, but MT4 remains the most familiar for South African traders.
The platforms also differ in how you manage risk from one screen. MT4 has a simple stop loss and take profit field on the ticket, but modifying a trade requires a separate window. MT5 allows you to set stop loss and take profit as price levels on the chart itself, which is faster. cTrader lets you drag stops directly on the chart and shows the trade's risk-reward in real time. FxPro Edge is built for quick order entry with minimal clicks. For gold, where a pip is 0.01 and a standard lot is 100 oz, the platform that shows your exposure in rand or US dollars before you click buy or sell is the one that keeps you fast and accurate.
Verify the FSCA licence on the regulator's register in four steps
To verify the FSCA licence of an FxPro entity, first go to the FSCA website and find the searchable register of authorised financial services providers. The FSCA register is public and lists all FSPs with their licence numbers and contact details. Do not rely on a logo or a licence number on a broker's website; always check the register yourself. The FSCA website has a 'Search for an FSP' tool where you can enter the name 'FxPro' or the FSP number if you have it. The result will show the legal entity name, the licence category, and the date of authorisation, which you can compare with the entity named in your account agreement.
Second, open the FSCA register search page and type 'FxPro' into the FSP name field. The search may return more than one entity because the FxPro group operates several subsidiaries. Look for the entity that matches the one in your Veld Terminal account documents. If your account is with FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL, that entity is not FSCA-licensed, so it will not appear in the FSCA register. In that case, check the register for the FxPro entity that does hold an FSCA licence and note the difference. The register will show the FSP number, the physical address, and the contact person, which you can cross-check with the broker's own disclosure page.
Third, once you find the FSCA-licensed FxPro entity, note the licence number and the category of licence. South African FSPs are licensed for specific categories such as Category I (advice and intermediary services) or Category II (discretionary mandates). A retail CFD broker should hold a Category I licence to deal in derivatives. The FSCA register will also show any conditions or restrictions on the licence. If the licence is suspended or withdrawn, the register reflects that. Fourth, compare the entity name on the FSCA register with the entity in your account opening email and on your statements. If they differ, contact support and ask which entity holds your funds and under which regulator you are protected. This step takes less than five minutes and is the only way to know your actual regulatory standing.
FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK) and CySEC, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence in South Africa — check which entity your own account is opened with. Trading gold on leverage is high risk: you can lose more than your deposit. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose.
